Being Healthy Outside of a Gym

Brooke Bauman

It seems that the talk of today is all about how to get active. Majority of the advice we see is tailored to people that have access to a gym but what about if you don’t? When you increase your NEAT (Non exercise activity thermogenesis) by doing a couple simple life changes you will burn more at rest.

  • Park farther away

Parking farther gets you walking more. Next time you are looking for a spot when going into the mall or work attempt to find a spot just a little bit farther and watch how you increase your physical activity more every day,

  • Take the stairs

Instead of hopping in the elevator, take the stairs. Expending more energy taking the stairs leads to an increased number of calories you’ll burn for that day.

  • Pick up your pace

Often walking seems to be a daunting task since it seems that there is always a faster way to get somewhere. But wait, there is just by picking up your walking speed. This slight increase in your steps helps to ramp up your heart rate just enough to work a little harder while expending more energy.

  • Break up your sitting time

You go to work and find yourself sitting all day. You sit in your car on the way to work and then you sit at your desk finishing projects for hours. Instead of pushing through the work day being sedentary get up and move. This can be going for a walk around the building, inside or outside. It can be going to speak to the person you were going to send an email to, to get yourself up and moving.

These are great life changes to implement too if you do have access and want to get into the gym but it’s a way for people to improve their cardiovascular and physical health without equipment. These tricks will break up the time you’re sedentary and then when you are seated after, you’ll continue to be burning more calories compared to not increasing your active time.
